Vicarious Trauma/ Secondary Trauma Stress
June 24th 9:30am - 12:30pm
Professionals in various roles often interact with individuals and families who have
been victimized and have experienced trauma. Frequently, they work in
communities that have been impacted by personal and natural disasters. Helping
professionals are commonly the first to hear an individual’s trauma story or respond
to a traumatic scene. Hearing about or witnessing a person’s trauma can often
cause secondary trauma stress, which can feel like experiencing the stress
firsthand. This course will provide an overview on vicarious trauma and secondary
trauma stress. It will help individuals identify signs and symptoms of vicarious
trauma and discuss the impact of trauma on daily responsibilities and life domains.
It will prepare individuals on how to manage their own emotions and use personal
strengths to manage potentially traumatic situations.
Compassion Fatigue

Compassion fatigue is common for helping professionals who are working with
individuals who have experienced trauma. While it is important to have empathy, it is
also important to recognize the physical, emotional, and spiritual symptoms that can
contribute towards compassion fatigue. It is crucial to learn when too much empathy
can have a negative impact on your health. In this course, participants will learn about
the roots and history of compassion fatigue and identify common etiologies for
compassion fatigue and burn out. This course will help professionals understand the
role of perceived threat to the sympathetic nervous system. Helping professionals will
learn how to assess for compassion fatigue. In addition, cognitive behavioral tools and
self-regulation techniques for burnout prevention will be taught.
