A Beginner’s Guide to Reiki

Have you been curious about Reiki? Are you wondering what it can offer you? Maybe you have been interested in trying it but can’t seem to gather up the courage to do so. Perhaps you feel it’s too mysterious or “out there” or for you.

The Reiki practice may be difficult to comprehend at first, but we think it’s important for newcomers to learn about how this amazing healing power works and the many benefits that come along with it!

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an energy healing treatment that works holistically; on the whole body, mind and spirit. Not a system of religious beliefs, Reiki is simply a relaxing treatment whereas natural healing vibrations are transmitted through the hands of a Reiki practitioner (acting as a conduit) to the body of the recipient. The purpose of a Reiki treatment is to relieve stress and pain, induce relaxation, release emotional blockages, accelerate natural healing, balance subtle bodies energies and support other medical modalities including traditional therapies.

Did You Know? The International Center for Reiki Training has estimated that there are 4,000,000 people throughout the world who have taken at least one level of Reiki training.

Today, Reiki education is offered free of charge in more than 800 American Hospitals as a means to accelerate the healing process and to alleviate pain. With these interesting facts, you could say that the spirit of Reiki is the spirit of our planet's future!

Whom Should I See?

Take the time to find and choose a practitioner (professional or friend) with whom you feel comfortable and who meets your standards. You'll want someone who clearly describes the process and how he or she structures the session so you have an idea of what to expect. Your actual experience of the therapy is very subjective, but knowing what the practitioner will do next will help you relax into his or her care.

What Is The Setting?

A quiet setting where you are not disturbed is always desirable. Professional Reiki practitioners have a dedicated space or are experienced in creating that space when making house calls. They frequently play soft music during the session as a way of masking ambient noise. Be sure to let your practitioner know if you prefer silence.

How Does a Reiki Treatment Work?

A Reiki session typically involves the recipient either lying on a treatment table or sitting on a chair, while remaining fully clothed. Treatments normally last between 60 and 90 minutes during which time the Reiki practitioner will place their hands gently on the recipient’s body, or just above the body. The practitioner will typically change the positioning of their hands several times as the treatment progresses. All the recipient has to do is relax!

Although each individual will experience something different during a treatment, people often report feeling deeply relaxed during a Reiki session. Some common experiences shared are feelings of heat, coolness or tingling where the practitioner has placed their hands or the body gently moving as if it were naturally re-adjusting itself. Each person will have their own unique experience, but the most important thing to pay attention to is how you feel after the session.

Do you feel free of pain? Or like a huge emotional weight has finally been lifted off your shoulders? Maybe you will feel you are sleeping better at night or perhaps an improvement in your appetite. However big or small, these changes are signs that your body is naturally restoring balance.
